var / package的真正用途是什么？

也许我完全错过了一些东西，但是我还没有找到关于var / package目录的确切含义以及如何使用它的清晰解释。我已经看到它包含在许多问题解决方案中（清除它，检查其中的xyz文件等），但是实际上它是做什么的？

var/package是所有已安装软件包的位置（不是软件包的实际内容，而是软件包内容的信息）。Magento Connect Manager使用它，如果我们在其中打开其中一个文件，则会发现：
